Hong Kong-based airlines may be banned from flying over Russia to and from US

Major Chinese airlines are urging the US to abandon a plan to bar them from flying over Russia on flights to and from the US, saying it would increase flight times, raise air fares and could disrupt some routes. 

This came after the US Transport Department proposed such a ban last week, saying the reduced flight time of the Chinese airlines puts American carriers at a disadvantage. 

Russia has barred US airlines and many other foreign carriers from flying over its airspace after the start of its war with Ukraine. 

Among the six airlines sending letters to Washington are Air China, China Southern and China Eastern. 

According to Reuters, United Airlines is asking the Trump administration to also add Cathay Pacific and other Hong Kong-based airlines to the prohibition list.
