The Institute for Human Resource Management estimates that salary increases in Hong Kong will be around 3.5 percent next year, but only 30 pecent of companies have indicated they will raise pay.
Between January and September of this year, the Institute for Human Resource Management surveyed 167 organizations across various industries, covering 142,000 full-time employees.
68 percent of these companies indicated they had not yet decided whether to increase salaries next year. Only 30 percent explicitly stated they would increase pay. The Institute described the wait-and-see attitude as prevalent.
The Institute stated that the salary increases reflect the improving Hong Kong economy and the current shortage of staff across various industries, and believes that companies will actively retain talent.
As for the average salary increase for employees this year, it was only 2.7 percent, a year-on-year decrease of 0.5 percentage points, and an actual increase of only 1.2 percent after adjusting for inflation.
