Madagascar president says coup is underway

Madagascar's president said an attempt to grab power by force was under way in the East African country.
Troops from the elite CAPSAT unit, which helped President Andry Rajoelina seize power in 2009, are now urging fellow soldiers to disobey orders and back Gen-Z protesters who have been demonstrating against poverty, cost of living, and alleged corruption by government officials.
CAPSAT officers said they had command over the country's security operations and would coordinate all branches of the military from their base.
In a statement on its social media account, Rajoelina's office said the president had urged "dialogue to resolve the crisis."
