The growth of China's global exports has hit a six-month high, as manufacturers find buyers in markets beyond the US where a tariff deal with Washington remains elusive.

China's worldwide exports were 8.3 percent higher than a year earlier, surpassing economists' estimates, and the figure was markedly better than the 4.4 percent year-on-year increase in August. Exports to the US, meanwhile, fell 27 percent in September, as exports to the US have come under pressure from Washington's policies aimed at trying to get manufacturers to shift factories to America.

In the meantime, China has expanded markets for its products in other regions, such as Southeast Asia, Latin America and Africa.

US President Donald Trump unveiled additional levies of 100 percent on China's US-bound exports, after Beijing put several new rare earth elements under export controls and imposed additional scrutiny on semiconductor users.

China's Commerce Ministry said in an online statement that "China's stance is consistent" and that "we do not want a tariff war but we are not afraid of one."

Hours later, Trump used his Truth Social platform to send a message that may be seen as an attempt to back off from his earlier threats.

On Air Force One, he again called President Xi Jinping a great leader and that they have a great relationship.

It remains to be seen whether a meeting between Xi and Trump would materialise later this month and a broad trade agreement can come to fruition.
