The Fire Services Department's outgoing deputy director of operations Angus Wong retires tomorrow. Looking back at his 31-year career, Wong says the most memorable experience was the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.

The vetern fireman joined the department in 1994 and has been fighting blazes on the front lines over the decades.

He recounts the magnitude 8.2 Sichuan earthquake where he was sent to the battlefield.

"The buildings were stacked together like pancakes, but my colleagues managed to emerge unscathed," he remembers.

The UN International Search and Rescue Advisory Group will come to Hong Kong for assessment next year, Wong says.

The FSD will prepare a simulated 48-hour rescue mission for the assessment.
