Trump plans to pay troops with R&D funds amid government shutdown

As the U.S. federal shutdown stretched into the second week, the Trump administration said they will tap unused funds set aside for research and development to get the troops paid.
President Donald Trump said in a social media post that he wouldn't allow Democrats to hold the troops and the entire national security hostage.
He will direct U.S. Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to use "all available funds" to pay members of the military if the shutdown continues after next Wednesday.
A Pentagon official suggested about 8 billion U.S. dollars originally set for research, development, testing and evaluation might be used.
Thousands of federal workers, including those at departments of Treasury and Homeland Security, received layoff notices on Friday as part of the administration's broad efforts to reshape the government.
Some unions have filed legal actions, arguing the legality of the mass reduction in forces.
