Hollywood actress Diane Keaton dies at the age of 79

Diane Keaton, the Oscar-winning star of Annie Hall, The Godfather films and Father of the Bride, has died at the age of 79. She was known for her quirky, vibrant manner and depth in her roles, making her one of the most remarkable actors of a generation.
The unexpected news of Diane Keaton's death was met with shock around the world, with tributes pouring in from friends and Hollywood insiders. Bete Middler, who she starred with in The First Wives Club said, "She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star."
Her early film roles in the 1970s were with actor-writer-director Woody Allen in such movies as Sleeper, Love and Death, Manhattan and Annie Hall, which she won an Oscar for Best Actress. "Oh God Annie. Oh well, la dee da, la dee da."
She would go on to be nominated three more times, for Reds, Marvin's Room, and Something's Gotta Give. Her role in The Godfather, as the wife of Michael Corleone played by Al Pacino, showcased her talent for serious dramatic parts.
Keaton was born Diane Hall in January 1946 in Los Angeles. Her mother was a homemaker and photographer and her father was in real estate and civil engineering. Keaton was drawn to theatre and singing while at school in Santa Ana, California. She dropped out of college after a year to make a go of it in New York. Equity already had a Diane Hall in their ranks, and she took the name Keaton, her mother's maiden name.
She started her career on Broadway as an understudy for Hair and in Allen's Play It Again, Sam in 1968. Allen and Keaton started a romanitc relationship at that time which lasted for three years after which they remained collaborators and friends. Throughout she remained grounded and humble, according to friends.
On her legacy, Keaton said previously, "I don't think about my film legacy. I am just lucky to have been here at all, in any way, shape or form. I'm just fortunate. I don't see myself as anything other than that."
A family spokesperson said she died in California surrounded by loved ones.
