Wang Yi in Switzerland: Swiss side has been a reliable friend amid changing global tides

After wrapping up his Italy trip, Foreign Minister Wang Yi is in Switzerland to attend the fourth round of China-Switzerland Foreign Ministers' Strategic Dialogue with his Swiss counterpart Ignazio Cassis. Wang says both sides have agreed to deepen cooperation.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in the southern Swiss town of Bellinzona, where he was received by Swiss Federal Councillor and Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis, whom Wang met several times this year, such as during the signing ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organisation for Mediation in Hong Kong in May. Also there were other Swiss and Chinese diplomatic officials.
In a meeting over tea, Wang Yi gifted his Swiss counterpart a giant panda painting and a tea set.
The two sides then held the fourth round of China-Switzerland Foreign Ministers' Strategic Dialogue, which lasted nearly two hours.
Meeting the press, Wang says this year marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Switzerland.
He said both countries are turbocharging an "upgraded version" of their free trade agreement, with more goods to be granted zero tariffs and more cooperation over emerging fields including AI, high-end manufacturing and green transformation.
Having extended the unilateral visa-free policy to Switzerland, Wang says China welcomes more Swiss friends to visit the country.
He notes that both sides have agreed to deepen pragmatic cooperation and Beijing appreciates how Switzerland has been "a reliable friend" amid changing global tides.
On the Middle East, Wang says China welcomes all efforts to restore peace and save lives, noting the situation in Gaza is a humanitarian disaster.
He says only when Palestine achieves its statehood can the root causes of historical injustice and violence be eliminated - with the long-term peaceful coexistence between Palestine and Israel.
