Japan's Komeito party said it plans to terminate its coalition with the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, ending a partnership between the two political parties that has lasted more than 25 years.

Tetsuo Saito, leader of Komeito, said in a meeting this afternoon that his party will leave the coalition government.

He added that it will not vote for LDP's newly-elected president Sanae Takaichi in the upcoming parliamentary session as prime minister due to different political views.

Local media reported Komeito pressed for more efforts to tackle the funds scandal and tighter controls of political donations from businesses and organisations, whereas LDP has been seeking to avoid restrictions on such donations to individual lawmakers.
