The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded this year's Nobel Prize in Literature to Hungarian novelist and screenwriter Laszlo Krasznahorkai for his "compelling and visionary oeuvre."

He is the second Hungarian to pick up the award.

Several of his novels including "Satantango" and "The Melancholy of Resistance" have been adapted into feature films.

The 71-year-old postmodern author was born in the town of Gyula.

Featuring long sentences and unbroken paragraphs, Krasznahorkai's dystopian works were influenced by his travels across Europe after he left communist Hungary in 1987.

He also drew inspiration from Mongolia and China for "The Prisoner of Urga" and "Destruction and Sorrow Beneath the Heavens."

The Nobel judges have praised his "artistic gaze which is entirely free of illusion, and which sees through the fragility of the social order combined with his unwavering belief in the power of art."
