Foreign Minister Wang Yi began his visit in Italy and met with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived at Villa Madama in Rome at about 10 a.m. local time, received by his Italian counterpart Antonio Tajani, who's also serving as Italy's Deputy Prime Minister, to attend the bilateral meeting between Beijing and Rome and the 12th Joint Meeting of the China-Italy Government Committee.

After the hour-long meeting, Wang and Tajani met the press.
Tajani says they touched on bilateral cooperation in fields encompassing finance and trade as well as culture and arts. They would also strive to launch direct flights between Beijing and Venice.
Venice is the hometown of Marco Polo, who travelled to China through the Silk Road during the Yuan Dynasty.
The Chinese foreign minister says Italy is one of the European countries with the most direct flights with China.
Wang Yi says after China implemented a visa-free policy for Italy, the number of Italians visiting China doubled last year.
He says China will continue the visa-free policy for Italy for more "Marco Polos of this new era" to embark on a China expedition.
Wang Yi adds that upon the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Beijing and Rome, relations between the two countries have maintained steady development, noting that mutual respect is the right way for countries -- big and small -- to get along.
