MTR has issued a non-conformance report to a contractor after the party failed to comply with the railway operator's procedures of material examination.

Some materials such as screws were used without approval.

MTR's Tung Chung East Station is the affected project. Sources say the materials in question are self-tapping screws for firewall driving and shear pins for the installation of steel bridges, neither of which have been approved.

In response, MTR says authorities have issued a non-conformance report to the contractor, which has been following up on the matter, including submitting relevant material information and conducting specimen tests.

The railway operator says the tests have been completed based on the requirements of contracts and legislation.

MTR added that construction work involving the screws and the pins are ongoing, and authorities will continue to monitor the process. The MTR said the parts in question have not been delivered.

But MTR did not mention how the issues came to light and the number of affected components.

While suggesting the material quality is not an issue, lawmaker Gary Zhang said the incident could negatively impact MTR's construction reputation.

He said authorities should pay attention to the matter. This is not the first time that the project has suffered hiccups.

In August, MTR discovered that unauthorised materials were being used in the Tung Chung East Station project.

Information states that the project's contractor is Paul Y.-CRCCI Joint Venture.
