Sanae Takaichi, who is seen as a strong contender to become Japan's first female prime minister, has in the past visited Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine, where World War II Class-A war criminals are enshrined.
According to sources cited by Japan's Kyodo News, she is considering cancelling her planned visit to the shrine during its autumn festival next Friday through Sunday.
It is reported that Takaichi hopes to meet with President Xi Jinping during the APEC summit scheduled to take place in South Korea later this month.
Her aides have advised her to avoid causing any controversy ahead of this potential meeting.
Komeito leader Tetsuo Saito, head of the ruling coalition partner, also told Takaichi that as China, Russia, and North Korea are deepening their cooperation, visiting Yasukuni Shrine should not be allowed to become a diplomatic issue.
