Israel and Hamas were to resume talks after wrapping up a round of negotiations at the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt.

US President Donald Trump's Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, were to join the talks, along with Ron Dermer, an advisor to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Israe-Gaza -- a border with a bloody history that goes back decades before October 7th, 2023 but which these days is defined by that date. Grief and suffering on both sides.

For Palestinians, October 7th has evolved into an existential concern, with millions displaced, living in tents, facing starvation and worried that they will be forced to leave Gaza.

Oman Abu Shikil, displaced from Jabaliya, said: "We want this war to end. We hope they reach a solution. I'm begging them to stop the war. This is enough. This is a genocide. It's destroyed trees, stones, and people. Half of the population is left with a disability. We live in filth. Our tent is in the street."

More than 67,000 Palestinians have been killed over the past two years, thousands more believed buried under rubble.

Israeli police officer Sharon Rahmani was killed in the attacks. For her father Yehudah, the talks in Egypt are irrelevant.

"What will it give me?," he asks. "My daughter? I've already paid my price. If there will be a ceasefire or there will not be a ceasefire, what does it matter? That the terrorists sit in detention cells and get good food and thick mattresses and we sit here and cry here everyday instead of giving us answers?"

Israelis gathered in Tel Aviv on Tuesday to mark two years since the Hamas attacks and urged for the return of the hostages.

Mothers of hostages spoke of the pain they continue to endure as their loved ones remain held in Gaza.

The Egypt talks are aimed at building the groundwork for the release of all remaining 48 hostages, of whom 20 are still believed to be alive.

Out of Trump's 20-point peace plan, Hamas has agreed to release the hostages and hand over governance of Gaza to a Palestinian authority.

However, the group has given no indication it will lay down arms with the proposals offering only a vague pathway towards Palestinian statehood, one of Hamas' key conditions for disarming.

Meanwhile, in Turkey, Istanbul's iconic Galata Tower was illuminated with the colours of the Palestinian flag on Tuesday night.

The tower, which dates back to the Middle Ages, was originally a Genoese structure, built to serve as a watchtower.

The special light show was organised by Turkey's Ministry of Culture and Tourism, aimed at highlighting the humanitarian plight in Gaza. Public support for Palestinians runs deep in Turkey.
