A Chinese representative lashed out at the U.S. for using unilateral tariffs to coerce members of the World Trade Organization into signing bilateral deals, which infringes the legitimate rights and interests of many third parties.

Li Yongjie, head of China's Permanent Mission, told delegates at a meeting of the WTO General Council earlier this week that U.S. trade policies have disrupted the supply chain and global markets and became a major source of global instability.

The way Washington pressured other members has led to a "power-based" relationship that is gradually eroding the multilateral trading system based on rules, Li said.

China called on countries to enhance transparency and supervision while collectively upholding multilaterism to promote pragmatic outcomes within the WTO system.

Representatives from the European Union, Brazil, Switzerland and other members also called for adherence to the fundamental principles of the organisation and carrying forward its reform.
