The International Criminal Court convicted a leader of the Janjaweed militia for playing a leading role in atrocities committed in the Sudanese region of Darfur more than 20 years ago.
It was the first time the court has convicted a suspect of crimes in Darfur.
Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman, also known as Ali Kushayb, was convicted of crimes for leading Janjaweed militia forces that went on a campaign of killing and destruction in 2003 to 2004.
Abd-Al-Rahman was transferred to the court's custody in 2020, after surrendering in Central African Republic.
During the trial, judges heard from 56 witnesses who described horrific violence and the use of rape as a weapon
to terrorise and humiliate.
