Protesters both for and against Ecuador's President Daniel Noboa rallied in the capital Quito, after a state of emergency took effect in 10 provinces Sunday.
Anti-government demonstrations began two weeks ago, organised by the country's Indigenous group, in response to the removal of a fuel subsidy that raised diesel prices by one dollar a gallon.
Around midnight Saturday, the government declared a new state of emergency due to serious internal unrest in 10 provinces, where the indigenous population predominates and where protests have been focused. One person died and several were injured during the unrest, as a hundred protesters were detained.
