Hundreds of hikers stranded by a blizzard near the eastern face of Mount Everest have been guided to safety by rescuers.

Unusually heavy snow and rainfall has been recorded in the Himalayas.

As of Sunday, 350 trekkers had reached the township of Qudang in China, while contact with at least another 200 had been made.

Many visitors had taken advantage of the eight-day National Day holiday to climb the mountain.

Trekkers said the weekend had been wet and cold and hypothermia was a real risk for many of those stranded in the area.
