African coffee beans are becoming increasingly popular in the China-Africa trade, particularly in Hunan Province.
Coffee shops are capitalising on this niche by establishing a coffee production chain in the city.
Coffee shops are a familiar sight in Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province.
Thanks to efforts to boost trade with Africa, over 6.5 million yuan worth of coffee was imported in the first four months of this year, local media reports. Some young people are turning to black coffee as a fat-burning drink.
However, for coffee enthusiasts like this Singaporean tourist, the coffee culture in this inland city is still developing.
Jing Jianhua established a coffee shop focusing on African coffee beans four years ago.
He emphasises the quality of coffee produced in Ethiopia, a region known for its significant temperature variations between day and night, along with its fertile soil.
Now, the brand has set up roasting facilities in Changsha to supply both their own stores and other brands, contributing to the emerging coffee industry chain in the city.
At the fourth China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo, Jing launched a new platform with various partners to purchase coffee beans, aiming to establish Changsha as a national hub for coffee production.
Jing Jianhua stated that many African supply chains have long been monopolised by international capital and large corporations.
This platform enables mainland Chinese buyers to trade directly with small coffee farmers. He anticipates that the trade volume for African coffee will grow by 30 to 40 percent, with costs at least 5 to 10 percent lower.
The headquarter of the organization is located next to the Changsha international conference centre, making it more convenient for coffee traders to conduct business here after the expo.
