Two Russian drones hit a Ukrainian railway station in Shostka, a city northeast of Kyiv, with Ukraine's foreign minister accusing Moscow of deliberately attacking passenger trains.
Two trains were targeted in quick succession, first a local commuter service and then one bound for Kyiv.
An air raid alert was ongoing at the station.
The Sumy regional governor said emergency services and medics were already working on the scene.
One person was killed and another 30 people sustained injuries, including passengers and rail workers.
Three children were among those hospitalised, according to the head of Ukraine's national rail operator.
The strike came a day after Russia carried out its largest attack on Ukraine's gas network.
