The Strong Wind Signal No. 3 is now in effect and will be in force at least until Sunday noon.
This as Tropical Cyclone Matmo is centred around 360 kilometres south of Hong Kong.
Along the Tsim Sha Tsui harbourfront, while the wind has picked up strength after nightfall, the sky is still clear with a bit more crashing waves.
Many citizens and tourists were still out and about taking a stroll along the promenade.
At windswept Heng Fa Estate in eastern Hong Kong Island, more waves whipped ashore.
But no flood barriers seen this time.
This resident says the weather is relatively calm tonight especially to those who reside in this flood-prone neighbourhood.
This man meanwhile says the storm surges are already quite strong.
In the Tseung Kwan O harbourfront, the restaurant that suffered much damage last time remains closed.
The manager of another nearby eatery says they're not as worried this time.
SANDEEP: "Since it's T3, if it's T8, I have to be super cautious. All the furniture inside, we are going to put some sandbags in."
While the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 is expected to remain in force at least until Sunday noon, Tropical Cyclone Matmo is expected to be closest to Hong Kong during Sunday morning.
The forecaster adds that unless Matmo moves even closer to the Pearl River Estuary, there is a relatively lower chance that the city sees persistent gale-force winds.
HKO adds that the weather will likely improve during the Mid-Autumn Festival with cloudy periods in the morning and at night.
