The Observatory will issue the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 between noon and 2 p.m. today.
In the past few hours, Matmo moved steadily across the central and northern parts of the South China Sea. With Matmo edging closer, local winds will strengthen gradually later today.
Matmo is expected to intensify progressively and edge closer to the vicinity of Leizhou Peninsula. Depending on the intensity of Matmo, the distance of its gale winds from the Pearl River Estuary and the change in local wind conditions, the Observatory will assess the need for issuing higher tropical cyclone warning signals tonight.
Locally, it will become cloudy with a few squally showers and thunderstorms later today. There will be more showers gradually. Seas are rough with swells. Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.
