The Federal shutdown in the U.S. has moved into its third day as thousands of government workers are under threat of being made redundant.

The Trump administration withheld 2.1 billion U.S. dollars for Chicago infrastructure projects, in addition to Wednesday's funding freezes for transit projects in New York City and green-energy projects in Democratic states including California and Illinois.

The pause, which affects a plan to extend Chicago's Red Line train, was to ensure funding is not flowing via race-based contracting, according to the White House budget director.

It is reported that funds of roughly 1.7 trillion dollars have been frozen in the standoff in Congress.

The U.S. Senate was set to reconvene for votes later today on dueling Democratic and Republican proposals to reopen the government.
