Basic Housing Units Ordinance to take effect on March 1, 2026

The government published the Basic Housing Units Ordinance in the Gazette today.
The law will take effect on March 1 next year, with 48 months of transitional period. Landlords will be able to register their flats within one year after the law comes into effect.
Under the new legislation, all basic housing units will have to meet a series of standards, such as having a minimum size of 8 square metres, a separate toilet.
They also need to comply with fire and structural safety regulations.
Landlords will have to make necessary renovations within 3-year grace period.
