As Severe Tropical Storm Matmo enters within 800 kilometres of Hong Kong, the Observatory issued the Standby Signal. No. 1 at 7:40 p.m.

The Observatory says the tropical cyclone warning signal may be upgraded during the day tomorrow, depending on the distance between Matmo and the Pearl River Estuary, and its intensity and change in local wind conditions.

A scorching hot day in the city precedes the approaching Matmo, with temperatures topping 33 degrees Celsius at noon over numerous districts.

But the weather will deteriorate in the next couple of days.

According to the present forecast, the Observatory said Severe Tropical Storm Matmo will move in the general direction of the vicinity of Leizhou Peninsula to the eastern part of Hainan Island over the weekend and intensify gradually.

But the weather forecaster said Matmo's intensity remains uncertain.

Dr. Kwok Yu-ting, Scientific Officer (Forecast Operation), HKO said, "Depending on the distance between Matmo and the Pearl River Estuary, and its intensity and the change in local wind conditions, the Observatory will assess the need of issuing higher tropical cyclone warning signal during the day tomorrow."

The Observatory warns of windy weather with squally showers over the coast of southern China during the weekend.

After Matmo departs, the weather is expected to improve for Mid-Autumn Festival next Monday and the day after.
