The value of Hong Kong's total retail sales increased by 3.8 percent year-on-year in August, marking a rise for four consecutive months.
According to the Census and Statistics Department, the total retail sales value in August was provisionally estimated at 30.3 billion dollars.
The sales value of jewellery, watches, clocks and luxury gifts saw the highest increase, up by about 16 percent year-on-year.
Medicines and cosmetics, rose by 5 percent.
Retail sales fell for commodities in supermarkets, food, alcoholic drinks and tobacco.
Among them, fuels fell the most by 11 percent.
A government spokesman says more stable local consumer sentiment, coupled with the growth in the number of visitors to Hong Kong and the government's active promotion of tourism and mega events, should support the city's retail business.
