The mainland's eight-day National Day Golden Week and Mid-Autumn holiday officially kicked off with today marking the peak for land border arrivals.

As of 4 p.m., more than 308 thousand travellers crossed the border into the city. Among them, 186 thousand are mainland visitors.

At the West Kowloon high-speed rail station, one of the city's busiest entry points for mainland tourists, crowds swelled early in the morning.

To greet the influx, the MTR deployed mascots at the station, delighting young children with plenty of "photo ops."

According to China's railway 12306 ticketing app, tickets from multiple mainland cities, including Guangzhou and Guiyang, had already sold out.

One of the hottest tourist spots was the Hong Kong Palace Museum. Some tourists there say they are planning to stay in Hong Kong for the entire holiday -- opting for a more relaxed itinerary instead of the popular "speed-run" way of visiting.
