The eight-day National Day Golden Week and Mid-Autumn Festival holiday begins tomorrow.

Chief Executive John Lee says he has instructed various government departments to make thorough preparations to ensure visitors have a good experience in the city.

As the Golden Week holiday approaches, at the West Kowloon high-speed rail station, many mainland tourists choose to travel a day earlier to avoid the travel rush.

Mainland tourist Eric says many, like him, have come a day early and he plans to take a look and shop around Hong Kong.

Some visitors opt for same-day return trips over multiple days.

This Shenzhen tourist says she's planning to visit Victoria Harbour and the Peak today and as the high-speed train is convenient, they just want to have some fun and head back home, noting that booking a hotel is too expensive.

Chief Executive John Lee says about 1.54 million mainland visitors are expected to visit Hong Kong during the eight-day holiday -- around 11 percent more than last year and higher than the number during the Lunar New Year and Labour Day holidays. Around 1,200 tour groups are expected.

Lee says given the large number of visitors, he hopes all travellers will have a good experience, noting he has instructed all departments to make the necessary arrangements to ensure activities can proceed in an orderly manner. At border control points, additional inspection counters and channels will be opened to ease passenger and vehicle flows.

Immigration authorities earlier estimated that October 1st will be the peak travel day, with about 610,000 people expected to enter Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge shuttle buses, known as the Golden Buses, Huanggang cross-border buses and MTR cross-boundary train services will increase their service frequencies.

Police will deploy manpower for crowd management during the National Day fireworks display.

Traffic and crowd control measures will also be put in place at the East Dam of High Island Reservoir in Sai Kung during peak periods.

The Transport Department has coordinated with minibus operators to ratchet up services on Route 9A with reserve backup vehicles and drivers.
