Authorities have earlier called for the better use of vacant space at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal for performances or exhibitions.

But the facilitation of such events has led to controversy with a number of cruises having been denied the opportunity to dock at the terminal, and the cruise ships redirected to the Ocean Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Hong Kong's fashionistas may have been overjoyed by French luxury brand Hermes' recent men's winter fashion show at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal.

But with the fashion event having taken centre stage at the terminal, Cruise ship MV Piano Land, which calls Hong Kong its home port, was instead forced to dock at Tsim Sha Tsui.

This as the Hong Kong Tourism Board's website introduced the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal as a hub for diverse exhibitions, featuring five large-scale arenas including two waiting areas and two luggage areas, while the site right beside the terminal is also suitable for outdoor activities and events.

Over the past few years, vessels have not experienced redirection owing to the facility's hosting of car shows or forums, with the recent case setting a precedent.

An academic from the Vocational Training Council noted the docking period of vessels at the terminal is usually arranged at least one to two years in advance.

He urged managers of the terminal to avoid disturbing cruise passengers with the facility's other commercial plans.

He added that if the dates of pre-arranged activities and cruises do collide, the former can use other more flexible sites such as the terminal's rooftop park to organise their events.

Speaking about the incident, lawmaker Gary Zhang stressed that while the cruise terminal should emphasise its diverse capabilities, its image should not be one that prioritises commercial activities.

Meanwhile, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law said authorities will continue to push for more tourism-related development at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal.
