Pope Leo XIV expressed his closeness to the people Hong Kong and others in Asia who were affected by recent typhoons.
The pontiff prayed for victims of Typhoon Ragasa and Typhoon Bualoi -- both storms affecting the region over the past two weeks.
The pope was presiding over the Mass for the Jubilee of Catechists at St Peter's Square.
Typhoon Ragasa left at least 28 dead in the northern Philippines and Taiwan before making landfall in China.
Vietnam evacuated thousands of people as Typhoon Bualoi raced towards the country.
Bualoi killed at least 20 people in the central Philippines.
POPE LEO XIV :"In recent days, a typhoon of exceptional strength has struck several Asian territories, particularly the Philippines, the island of Taiwan, the city of Hong Kong, the Guangdong region and Vietnam. I am close to the affected populations, especially the poorest, and I pray for the victims, the missing, the many displaced families, the countless people who have suffered hardship, and also the civil authorities' rescue workers.
