Starting from today, the charge for metered parking spaces will be raised to 4 dollars per 15 minutes. This marks the first parking meter fee adjustment in 31 years.
These street parking spaces in Wan Chai were fully occupied.
Starting from 10 a.m. on Sunday, a new parking meter fee has been introduced. Drivers must now pay 4 dollars to park their vehicles for 15 minutes instead of the previous 2 dollars, making it 16 dollars per hour. Some residents said they do not mind the new fee as long as there are available parking lots.
But the parking meter fees for coaches, trucks and buses remain unchanged -- drivers still pay 8 dollars an hour.
The Transport and Logistics Bureau says the adjustment aims to optimise the use of limited parking resources. The city had about 20,000 metered parking spaces as of the end of 2024.
In Tsuen Wan, this car park was packed with vehicles and many drivers were waiting nearby. Meanwhile, some cars parked overtime.
According to the Transport Department, the government's total revenue from parking meters in 2023 was around 400 million dollars. After the adjustment, authorities expect to receive an extra revenue of 220 million dollars in this financial year.
Apart from raising the meter fee, authorities also plan to increase the on-street parking spaces to meet demand.
