Today marks the 200th anniversary of the first steam train to run on a public railway.

It was a milestone which led to rapid changes in the way the world lived and traded.

On September 27, 1825, George Stephenson's Locomotion No. 1 made its 26-mile journey on the Stockton and Darlington Railway in the northeast of England.

A newly restored replica of Locomotion No. 1 recreated the original journey to mark the bicentenary.

Prince Edward from the British royal family was among the passengers on board a carriage pulled by the replica engine.

Soon after the original steam engine's debut, rail enabled the rapid transportation of raw materials and industrial goods.
