During Super Typhoon Ragasa's battering of Hong Kong, a major sewage pipe in the Southern District suffered serious damage, with some untreated wastewater released into the sea. The Drainage Services Department has reminded the public not to swim in the nearby Deep Water Bay and Repulse Bay.

But some beachgoers still braved the potential pollution and went into the affected waters today.

The damaged 450-millimetre sewage pipe is located under the Mills & Chung Path next to Island Road -- with repair efforts underway.

The affected section sits near Deep Water Bay Beach - with warnings issued online and broadcast on site about the situation.

At the beach, red flags have been hoisted with no lifeguards at the lookout.

Still, some beachgoers could be seen sunbathing and even taking a dip.

Some paddled dragon boats outside the shark nets.

This beachgoer says the untreated pipe water from the sewage pipe should be diluted in the sea.

This dragon boat paddler says they have to practice every day but they have taken some care to minimise water splashes.

A similar sight at Repulse Bay Beach where lifeguards urged swimmers to get back to the shore.

The Drainage Services Department collected seawater samples from Deep Water Bay and Repulse Bay on Friday.

All recorded less than 50 E. coli per 100 millilitres of samples.

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has announced earlier that because of the need for review and treatment of the damage and debris caused by Ragasa, only eight public beaches are reopened.

A frontline lifeguard union says the government should consider temporarily closing beach entrances and exits.

This as after the storm, even lifeguards' staff lounges were severely damaged with emergency clear-up work needed.

Under the law, anyone entering a closed beach is liable upon conviction to a maximum fine of 2,000 dollars and 14-day imprisonment.
