The government is planning to issue new licences that allow dogs to enter certain restaurants as unveiled in the latest Policy Address.
Secretary for Environment and Ecology Tse Chin-wan says pets will not be allowed in areas where food is handled or prepared including not just kitchens -- but also hotpot and barbecue restaurants.
The first batch of licences is expected to be granted by the middle of next year.
Speaking at the Legislative Council, Tse says food safety will be a priority and pet owners are responsible for keeping their dogs under control inside the premises.
He adds that details such as where the dogs can stay and their size restrictions are still being ironed out with the industry.
He says they include hygiene concerns such as how dog fur could get into cooking utensils or food and that the line of responsibility needs to be clearly defined.
