U.S. President Donald Trump has escalated his retribution campaign against his perceived enemies. After his Justice Department brought criminal charges against longtime foe former FBI director James Comey, Trump is now going after liberal groups, trying to classify them as domestic terrorist organisations.
Speaking to reporters on the South Lawn of the White House President Trump defended his Justice Department's indictment of former FBI director James Comey and warned there will be others.
(Reporter) Mr. President, on James Comey, now James Comey has been indicted, who is the next person on your list in this retribution?
"There's not a list, but I think there'll be others. I mean, they're corrupt. These were corrupt, radical left Democrats. Because Comey, essentially was a - he's worse than a Democrat. I would say the Democrats are better than Comey. But, no, there'll be others," Trump said.
Trump dismissed suggestions that Comey was being charged as part of a broader retribution campaign, insisting the indictment is about justice not revenge.
(Reporter) Is this more about justice or is it about revenge?
"It's about justice, really. It's not revenge. It's about justice. It's also about the fact that you can't let this go on. They are sick, radical left people. And they can't get away with it. And Comey, Comey was one of the people. He wasn't the biggest. But he's a dirty cop. He's always been a dirty cop. Everybody knew it."
Comey has been charged with making a false statement to Congress and obstruction of a criminal proceeding. The former FBI director has been scrutinised over the years by both Republicans and Democrats. He is a former Republican who is no longer registered with a political party. He spent 15 years as a federal prosecutor before serving in the George W. Bush administration.
His office brought the case that led to Martha Stewart's conviction on obstruction of justice and lying to government investigators. In 2013, President Barack Obama nominated Comey to head the FBI. He was FBI director when Trump was inaugurated in January 2017 where he oversaw an inquiry into ties between Russia and Trump's successful 2016 presidential campaign.
Trump fired Comey months into his first administration and since then Comey has remained a top target for Trump supporters seeking retaliation related to the Russia investigation.
