Sources say two women were arrested on suspicion of child neglect after they allegedly took a boy outdoors to experience super typhoon Ragasa. Police said the eight-year-old suffered injuries.
An online video captures the scene at South Horizons: Two women and a boy stood near the waterfront to watch the waves caused by Ragasa. The trio were seen taking a selfie.
The next second, they were swept by a storm surge.
After inspecting the video and looking at CCTV footage, police on Thursday arrested the two women, an Indian and a Sri Lankan, aged 36 and 32, respectively.
Speaking to the media, the force said the boy had suffered clear injuries and was sent to hospital.
The two suspects, one being the boy's mother, and the other being the mother's friend, were accused of neglecting the child.
Meanwhile, police said they had received a report about someone who swam at Tuen Mun's Golden Beach during T10. Authorities said they would follow up on the case and may issue an arrest warrant if needed. The force also said they would conduct online patrols to collect evidence in other storm-chasing cases.
On a radio programme this morning, Secretary for Security Chris Tang said the city currently has no legislation to regulate storm chasing. Tang said the government plans to step up enforcement.
