Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy said he would appeal after being sentenced to five years in prison by a Paris court.
The 70-year-old was found guilty of criminal conspiracy for an alleged scheme to finance his 2007 campaign with funds from Libya's Gaddafi regime in exchange for diplomatic favours.
The court ruled today that Sarkozy will have to serve a prison term even if he appeals, adding that his sentence would start at a later time.
He was acquitted of other charges including illegal campaign financing and passive corruption.
Sarkozy, who has denied all wrongdoing, said "hatred" against him "knows no bounds" and that he was the victim of scandalous injustice.
