At a United Nations summit, President Xi Jinping announced China's 2035 Nationally Determined Contributions, including cutting carbon emissions by up to 10 percent in the next decade, while calling for increased global climate cooperation to address the shortfall in green production capacity.

Ahead of the COP30 climate negotiations scheduled in Belem, Brazil in November, President Xi Jinping on Wednesday attended a United Nations' high-level summit via video link to unveil China's new climate goal.

The discussions of more than 110 world leaders centred around the pressing need for stronger efforts to curb the coal, oil and natural gases that lead to climate change.

Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres said: "We must supercharge the clean energy transition. Investing in grids and storage to unlock the full potential of renewables. Lowering capital costs for developing countries. And redirecting fossil fuel subsidies to a just transition."

In his address, Xi vowed to bring down China's economy-wide net greenhouse gas by 7 to 10 percent from peak levels by 2035.

The move entails plans to ramp up the country's wind and solar power sixfold from 2020 levels, make new energy vehicles mainstream, and establish "a climate adaptive society."

"Green and low-carbon transition is the trend of our times," Xi stated, adding that these targets represent China's best efforts based on the requirements of the 2015 Paris Agreement.

He and Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva took swipes at U.S. President Donald Trump's remarks a day earlier that defied renewable energy and the concept of climate change.

Xi stressed, "While some country is acting against it, the international community should stay focused on the right direction."

And Lula warned nations that the Belem gathering and the updates of national climate plans will show the world "whether or not we believe in what the science is showing us."

He said, "Walls at borders will not stop droughts or storms," urging wealthy countries to expand access to resources and technologies for developing countries.

The climate summit was held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the general debate of the General Assembly in New York, which was attended by Premier Li Qiang.

He has expressed China's readiness to work with the U.N. to implement the Global Governance Initiative proposed by President Xi.

Li pointed out unilateralism and protectionism are currently on the rise, requiring nations to promote the building of a more just and equitable global governance system.
