Xi Jinping attends founding anniversary celebration of Xinjiang Autonomous Region

President Xi Jinping attended a gathering in Urumqi for the 70th founding anniversary of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China.
The visit makes him the first national leader to be present at such a landmark celebration.
The jubilent gathering kicked off at the Xinjiang People's Hall this morning.
President Xi walked onto the rostrum amid a round of applause.
All participants stood in unison to sing the national anthem after chairman of the regional government Erkin Tuniyaz announced the commencement of the event.
China's top ethnic affairs advisor Wang Huning delivered a speech to urge the building of a socialist modern Xinjiang characterised by unity, harmony, prosperity and a sound eco-environment.
The past seven decades have seen profound economic and social transformation in Xinjiang. State media reported that over 3 million Xinjiang residents were lifted out of poverty by 2020.
