Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean claims Russia is spending hundreds of millions of euros to "take power" in a closely contested parliamentary election between the incumbent pro-western government and the Russia-friendly opposition.
In the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Moldova applied to join the EU and was granted candidate status. Moscow has repeatedly denied meddling in Moldova.
The Russian Foreign Ministry protested against Moldova's refusal to accredit Russian representatives as observers in the forthcoming elections.
A rally organised by the Russia-friendly opposition took place on Wednesday to protest against the government's actions in the past four years.
