A shooter with a rifle opened fire from a nearby roof onto a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, location in Dallas, killing one detainee and wounding two others before taking his own life. At least one of the surviving detainees was in critical condition.

It comes two weeks after the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, with Republicans blaming the left for fomenting political hate.

Law enforcement officers scour the roof of the building where the suspected shooter was believed to have fired his shots.

The shooter fired indiscriminately at the ICE building, including at a van in the sallyport where the victims were shot, the Department of Homeland Security said.

Ammunition was found at the scene, the FBI said, with agency head Kash Patel releasing a photo on social media showing a bullet with the worlds "ANTI-ICE" written on it.

The shooter was identified at Joshua Jahn, a 29-year-old, who was previously known to have worked odd jobs.

His older brother, Noah, told Reuters that he not aware of Joshua having any strong political views.

"I can confirm at this time that the FBI is investigating this incident as an act of targeted violence," said FBI Dallas Special Agent Joe Rothrock. "It is, unfortunately, just the most recent example we've seen of targeted violence to include here in North Texas."

It is the third recent attack on law enforcement in Texas. On July, 4, attackers in black, military-style clothing opened fire outside a detention centre in Alvarado, Dallas, injuring a policeman. Days later, a man with an assault rifle fired dozens of rounds at federal agents leaving a U.S. Border Patrol facility in McAllen.

It also comes two weeks after conservative activist Charlie Kirk was killed by 22-year-old Tyler Robinson at a Utah university.

U.S. President Donald Trump, who this week spoke about crime at the U.N., has jumped on the incident, calling it an escalation of politically motivated violence incited by the left.

Republicans, including Texas Senator Ted Cruz, accuse California Governor Gavin Newsom and other Democrats of stirring hate by villifying law enforcement.

"To every politician who is using rhetoric demonising ICE and demonising CBP (Customs and Border Patrol): stop," said Cruz. "To every politician demanding that ICE agents be doxxed and calling for people to go after their families: stop. This has very real consequences."

Officers were later seen at a suburban Dallas home linked to the suspect, who reportedly once worked in a marijuana farm harvesting leaves. The motivation for the attack was not immediately known.
