The Labour Department's guidelines state that employees can negotiate work arrangements with their employers under extreme weather.

But these are just guidelines. Some legislative councillors called for new laws to protect labour rights under such conditions.

The government, however, said it is not feasible.

On Wednesday, once the Observatory downgraded from Hurricane Signal No.10 to Gale Signal No.8, many residents began commuting to work.

Some lawmakers from the labour sector pointed out that existing official guidelines on working under extreme weather conditions are not legally binding.

The councillors urged the government to legislate to ensure the safety of labour.

In response, Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun said the government does not believe there is a need for legislation for work arrangements under extreme weather.

He said this is a delicate issue with many factors to consider, so a one-size-fits-all approach may not be suitable.
