Chinese landscape architect dies in Brazil plane crash

Brazilian authorities say the crash of a small plane in southwestern Brazil has killed four people including renowned Chinese landscape architect and urban planner Yu Kongjian.
The plane went down late Tuesday in the vast Brazilian wetlands of Mato Grosso do Sul state. The pilot and two Brazilian documentary makers on board were also killed.
Yu was known for developing the concept of sponge cities with infrastructure that can absorb rainwater to mitigate flood risks and improve the urban climate. Yu argued that by creating large spaces to hold water in city centres such as parks and ponds, extreme rainfall can be absorbed, helping to prevent floods.
