The Observatory just issued the Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 at 2:20 p.m..
The forecaster says it will assess the need to issue a higher signal later tonight or early tomorrow.
Super Typhoon Ragasa is currently about 420 kilometres east-southeast of Hong Kong and is expected to move west-northwestwards at about 22 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea and gradually moving towards the coast of Guangdong.
The Observatory predicts the weather will continue to be severe tomorrow morning while Ragasa will be closest to the Pearl River Estuary.
Gusts may reach hurricane force offshore and on high ground with squally winds, heavy showers and thunderstorms.
