Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, or LDP, opened its official campaigning to find a party leader replacement who can bring stability and voter support for the beleaguered party.
Five candidates are vying for the top job in a tight race in early October.
Its new leader is still likely going to be prime minister because the LDP remains the top political party in Japan, while opposition groups are too splintered to form a coalition.
Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi and former Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi are considered the top contenders.
If Takaichi, a former newscaster, is elected, she will be Japan's first female prime minister.
The LDP leader election is limited to its parliamentarians and dues-paying party members.
