The UK, Australia, Canada and Portugal now recognise a Palestinian state.
They join a list of around 150 countries, including China, who believe a two-state solution is the best path to peace in the Middle East.
Despite opposition from Israel and the United States, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer made the historic announcement with other allies, including France, set to follow.
The UK leading the way, saying a viable Palestinian state is the only solution to stop the "horrors in the Middle East."
KEIR STARMER,UK Prime Minister :"We are acting to keep alive the possibility of peace and a two-state solution. That means a safe and secure Israel, alongside a viable Palestinian state. At the moment, we have neither."
Starmer says this reflects the will of the British people.
Heavily attended "Free Palestine" rallies in London and even larger demonstrations in Australia as voters pressured their government to do more to help Palestinians.
Canada and Portugal followed the UK.
As did Australia with its prime minister echoing Starmer.
ANTHONY ALBANESE,Australian Prime Minister :"This is the best chance the world has had in decades to disarm and isolate Hamas and deliver self-determination for the people of Palestine. This is a moment of opportunity for nations of goodwill to work together to see the hostages taken in the atrocities of October 7, 2023 returned immediately and with dignity, to bring about an immediate ceasefire and to bring an end to the humanitarian catastrophe which is being inflicted on Gaza."
In Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired back calling the move "a prize for terrorism" and said there will never be a Palestinian state.
Israel's position and that of the U.S. is becoming more isolated.
In the coming days, at the U.N. General Assembly, more countries, including France, will recognise a Palestinian state.
Paris marked the moment by illuminating the Eiffel Tower with Palestinian and Israeli flags side by side, separated by a peace dove.
Ahead of President Emmanuel Macron's announcement, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said :"
France is committed to the two-state solution implementation.
Diplomatic relations will be gradual and conditional including the release of hostages.
The move by several Western countries is largely symbolic.
The reality for Palestinians in Gaza is very little will change in the short term.
Israel continues its war against Hamas displacing hundreds of thousands of people.
These refugees know they have little choice but to head to safe zones in the south of the strip.
Although some say they realise their plight is gaining widespread sympathy, they are more worried about having a house than a country.
