Super Typhoon Ragasa continues to edge closer to the coast of Guangdong, and the Hong Kong observatory says it will issue the Standby Signal No.1 around noon tomorrow.

Although the weather will improve briefly in Hong Kong on Monday, it will begin to deteriorate rapidly later on Tuesday, and winds may reach hurricane force offshore and on high ground on Wednesday.

The remnants of Mitag brought showers to the city.

The observatory issued the Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal at 9:10 this morning.

Weather authorities recorded about 30 millimetres of rain over widespread areas in the afternoon, with the rainfall even exceeding 70 millimetres in Tai Po and the eastern part of Lantau Island.

At 4 p.m., Super Typhoon Ragasa was centred about 690 kilometres northeast of Manila.

It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour towards the vicinity of the Luzon Strait and continue to intensify.

Ragasa is expected to enter within 800 kilometres of Hong Kong during the daytime on Monday at the earliest.

The weather will start deteriorating rapidly later on Tuesday.

The observatory estimates that Ragasa will be closest to Hong Kong on Wednesday morning, sweeping past the region to the south of the city.

Winds may reach hurricane force offshore and on high ground.

Seas may be very high with swells.

The weather forecaster warns the weather may be adverse with heavy squally showers.

Under the influence of a significant storm surge, the sea level over coastal areas by then may be similar to that of Hato in 2017 and Mangkhut in 2018.

Mangkhut caused significant damage to the Tseung Kwan O South Waterfront Promenade.

Bracing for the storm this time, the flood-prone waterfront housing estates have taken precautionary measures with sandbags and water barriers.

This resident said he was not so worried as this is not the first time the city is going to be hit by a storm surge.

Meanwhile, at the seaside village Lei Yue Mun, Drainage Services Department workers set up water pumps and drain pipes, as well as water barriers.

The manager of a Chinese restaurant said he will start boarding up windows after dinner time, adding that he is quite afraid that strong winds may devastate his restaurant.

To ensure students' safety, the Education Bureau will announce on Monday whether classes will be suspended on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The bureau will also give an update on the arrangements for the paper submission of applications for discretionary places under the Primary One Admission System.
