Outdoor brand Arc'teryx held a large-scale fireworks display in Xizang's Himalayas, alongside pyrotechnics artist Cai Guoqiang.

The event drew fire from netizens and ecologists who question the decision to set off explosions in such an ecologically fragile region.

Footage showed the artist igniting sequences of fireworks on Friday through gunpowder blasts, creating the "rising dragon" scene.

They were set off along the mountain ridges at an altitude of about 5,500 metres.

The organiser had stated earlier that all fireworks used biodegradable, eco-friendly materials and herders' livestock had been relocated to safe areas.

County officials say a team has been set up to look into the matter. The mainland brand and the artist involved have made an apology.
