A protest in Peru's capital, Lima, saw clashes between demonstrators and police.

Tear gas was fired and some people were seen running through the streets claming they "feared for their lives." Hundreds of young people gathered in a central square and were confronted by police as they tried to march toward the government palace.

Organised on social media in recent days the group of "Generation Zs" oppose proposed pension reform and are calling for better wages and labour conditions. The march also drew support from unions, environmentalists and other activist groups. Riot police waited for the march behind barricades.

Earlier this week, Peru's Congress approved a partial withdrawal of private pension savings equivalent to up to $7.5 billion, a measure expected to stimulate the economy but some analysts predict it could leave millions without retirement funds.

Peru is experiencing political turmoil following the six-month suspension of Attorney General Delia Espinoza.Espinoza had accused lawmakers, cabinet ministers and even President Dina Boluarte of various alleged crimes.
