Japan's Shinjiro Koizumi has officially announced his candidacy in the October 4th presidential election for the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

The 44-year-old pledged to rebuild the LDP during a news conference in Tokyo.

He unveiled a raft of policies that prioritised economic growth, including a push for wage hikes and addressing public concerns over a growing foreign population.

It marks Koizumi's second bid for the party's top post after losing to Shigeru Ishiba last year.

He is the second son of former Japanese leader Junichiro Koizumi and now serves as the country's Minister of Agriculture.

Former economic security minister Sanae Takaichi on Friday launched her bid to become Japan's first female prime minister, vowing to increase spending to reinflate the economy.
